Phosphate-based fertilisers are essential plant growth and also increase crop yields. Phosphoric acid is used in the production of fertilisers, treatment of meat, and the production of industrial and feed phosphates used in turn to manufacture foodstuffs and soft drinks, medicines and personal care products.
Monocalcium phosphate (Ca(H2PO4)2) is a concentrated feed phosphate used as a food supplement for livestock and poultry. The food additive replenishes deficiency in phosphorous and calcium in the diet of cattle, ensures the appropriate metabolism of organisms and thereby improves immune and reproductive systems, and accelerates weight gain in livestock and poultry.

Within the framework of modernisation plans from 2008 to 2010 a second monocalcium phosphate production line was commissioned (production of the line was started in 2002). Balakovo branch of Apatit is the only producer of monocalcium phosphate in Russia, a highly concentrated food additive for livestock and poultry.
In November 2010 a new SK-650 sulphuric acid production line and a 25MW turbine generator were commissioned. Aggregate sulphuric acid capacities after the launch of the SK-650 line increased by more than 150% to 1.9 million tonnes per year, making Balakovo branch of Apatit the second largest sulphuric acid producer in Russia (after PhosAgro-Cherepovets).
In 2012 the fleet of rail cars used to transport phosphoric acid was increased.
